HAPPY SPRING!!

20 Mar

Happy-Spring-natures-seasons-9456002-587-674

This is my first blog post in a while.  It has been a rough winter  so what better day to start writing again than the first day of spring! I plan to keep it up and share several more posts in the days ahead so be watching for new Fashion Trends and Styling Tips in the days ahead!

I love spring and all the beauty it brings.  It is a time of renewal and new beginnings.  It is a reminder of how awesome God is when we can see the flowers start to bloom and everything that was dead through the winter suddenly come to life again!

I don’t know about you but I kind of become “dead” through the winter months and then suddenly come back to life at the first signs of spring. I have said for years that I know I have SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and it seems to get worse every year. (I am self-diagnosed of course.)

As I am sitting here writing this I can hear the birds singing outside my window.  I love seeing all the beautiful colors of spring, feeling the warmth of the longer days of sunshine, hearing the sounds of children playing outside, smelling dinner cooking on the grill and, of course, enjoying all the beautiful spring fashions on the runways and in the stores!

2 Corinthians 5:17 says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”  I love this verse because, like the newness that spring brings, I became a new creation when I became a Christian.  My old ways, like the dreary days of winter, have passed away and I am a new person full of life and freshness and joy and beauty from the light of Jesus shining through me!

I love sharing fashion and styling tips with all of you to help you look your very best but you will always be the most beautiful when you have the love of Jesus in your heart and the JOY of spring in your smile!

Thanks for letting me share my excitement of spring with you and stay tuned for lots more posts with fun things ahead!

Spring Closet Cleaning!

19 Mar

Spring Closet Cleaning

Along with the new spring season comes one of my favorite chores – going through my closet and moving the sweaters to the back and bringing the spring and summer things to the front!  Even though I put on a few extra pounds this winter I am hoping this will motivate me to keep trying to get those 10,000 steps on my new Garmin Vivofit device so I can fit into my spring and summer things!  It is such a good feeling to go through and clean out and organize your closet (or is that just me?).

This is a good time to get rid of the things you didn’t wear all fall and winter.  If you didn’t wear them this year, you probably won’t wear them next year.  It is also a good time to reevaluate the things you have for spring and summer.  If they don’t fit anymore or they just don’t fit your taste anymore (remember if you wouldn’t buy it in the store today, you don’t need to keep it) then it is time to donate or take to consignment store.  Most consignment stores are taking spring and summer things now.

I have posted these steps for cleaning out your closet before but I thought this was a good time to remind you and help you start thinking Spring!

Your closet is one of the fastest places to get cluttered but it should be one of the most valued spaces in your home because it contains all the clothes that make you look and feel fabulous!

Here are some steps to help you get started on getting your closet ready for the new season:

Step One:

  • Set aside plenty of time to organize your closet.  If you don’t have time to do it all at once, take a section at a time.

Step Two:

  • Remove everything from your closet so that you are starting with a clean slate

Step Three:

  • Try on everything and make sure it still fits, it is still in style, it is still in good shape, it is your best color and fits your body type, you have things to go with it and it is something you would buy today. Make piles for “Keep”, “Mend”, “Donate” and “Toss”. Don’t forget to do the same thing with your underwear, bras, shoes, purses, belts, scarves and other accessories.

Step Four:

  • Clean and Laundry everything that needs it before putting back in the closet. If things need to be mended, make sure you do this as quickly as possible. Take the things to be donated to your car so you can drop them off the next time you are out. Get rid of the items in the “Toss” pile immediately.

Step Five:

  • Put all “Keep” items back in your closet. You can decide how to place the items back in the closet based on what will suit your needs best.  Separate by season and then you can separate by purpose, type, length, style or color or a combination of these.  Hang as much of your clothing as possible where you can see each garment easily.  If it is in a drawer out of sight, it is out of mind and will seldom get worn.

Step Six:

  • Be proud of your accomplishment!
  • Remember if you bring in something new, something old needs to go out.

Other Helpful Tips:

  • Use the same type of hangers and make sure all items are hanging in the same direction.
  • Stuff boots with rolled up magazines or boot trees so they retain their shape.
  • Stuff handbags with tissue paper and store on a shelf.
  • Leave breathing room in between items so they aren’t jammed in to prevent wrinkles.
  • Store small, loose items like socks, lingerie, bathing suits, pantyhose, etc. in drawer systems, baskets or clear plastic containers.
  • Hang accessories on hooks in your closet.
  • Take shoes out of their original boxes and store on some type of shoe rack.
  • Keep a basket in the closet to place items to take to dry cleaners.
  • Keep a small wastebasket in the closet.
  • Fill a small basket with last minute fix-up items: lint brush or roller, pin-cushion, small scissors, etc.

Brunch with Betsey!

19 Nov

Me and BetseyI was so excited when I received my invitation from Belk to attend a brunch they were hosting with Betsey Johnson at their South Park Mall location in Charlotte, NC.  She is definitely the fashion industry’s most whimsical and modern designer and a chance to chat one-on-one with her was such an awesome opportunity I didn’t want to miss! I had also recently seen her on one of my favorite shows on TV, Dancing With the Stars, and was so impressed at all her fabulous moves including her famously known split!

So off to Charlotte I went and my experience was much more than I had expected!  Besides being such a talented designer (and dancer), Betsey was one of the most kind, friendly and generous ladies I have ever met. She took time to pose for pictures with each of us that had been invited and answered all the questions that were asked.  Personally, I think she would have stayed and talked all day had she not had to get ready for her public appearance downstairs in the Belk store where some very excited people were waiting in a line that wrapped around the entire floor.

I was fortunate to be able to take my beautiful, fashionista mom with me on this little road trip and we were able to enjoy some great Mother-Daughter time and awesome shopping at the mall while we were there. Of course we shopped til we dropped!  She enjoyed meeting Betsey and was so excited to get to talk to someone who was just as short as she is!

IMG_3752

Next year will mark Betsey’s 50th year of designing! She stated she was initially inspired by Broadway chorus girl dancers and singers.  She loved the make-up, hair and costumes they wore.  At 72, she is still going strong and she looks fabulous!! She told the small group of us that fashion is up and down but if you love it, keep rowing the boat and never give up your dreams.  She has worked with big and small companies but says she loves working with her own company the best.   She only wants to dress people in things they love and feel good in. She said “beauty is in the eye of the beholder and you are the biggest beholder of what you wear”.

IMG_3745Betsey answered questions with our host for this event, Arlene Goldstein, who is Vice President of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction for Belk, Inc.  I always enjoy seeing Arlene and spending time with her and it was great to see her again!

IMG_3777Later in the afternoon, Betsey greeted the crowd that had been waiting to meet her in the store by tossing rose petals out of her designer bag. The excited group had been entertained by Micah Jesse, national television personality and entertainment journalist.  She then took time to talk with everyone and posed for more pictures.  A few lucky attendees even received some great prizes from her collection.

IMG_3778And of course, she was asked to do her famous split for the crowd and was happy to oblige!

Thanks Belk for the great opportunity to meet such a sweet, talented and FUN fashion icon!

Most Wanted List for Men for Fall 2014

5 Sep

O.K. I know most of my readers are female but we want to be fair to the males as well and show what the new Fall 2014 Trends are for them too. I hope you are starting to find some of the items I shared in my last post to add to your fall wardrobe. Since attending the Fall 2014 Fashion preview at Belk with Arlene Goldstein, Belk’s VP of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction, I am excited to share what’s new for the season for the men in your lives in this blog post.

Here are the ten must-have items for the season for men:

Chambray Shirt

This is an all time favorite that is always in style! You can dress it up or dress it down. It goes great with chinos or a suit and can be found in a wide range of blues so make sure to choose the shade that best fits your dominant color characteristic!

A+MENS+CHAMBRAY+SHIRT_LR

Athletic Top

As with the women’s trends, we are seeing so much gym-inspired clothing with new details and textiles to update and refresh knits of all kinds.  Check out this  baseball tee with elbow patches and the use of color blocking. You can certainly wear athletic inspired items with more polished items for a complete new look.

AA+MENS+ATHLETIC+TOP_LR

Corduroy Pant

Cords have never been a cooler option for the office or weekend wear.  You will find them in a range of browns and saturated burgundies for the wear anywhere colors. These can be worn with a sport coat or dressed down with a sporty sweatshirt.

MENS+CORDUROY+PANT_LR

Fashion Add-ons

Accessories are not just for the women.  Men have tie bars, boutonnieres, cuff links and pocket squares just to mention a few. Of course bow-ties are still a hot item too. These add on accessories are just the thing to take your look from “drab” to “fab”!

MENS+FASHION+ADD-ONS_LR

Henley

Layering is “the look” and the henley knit is a necessity for fall.  Use it to layer over a tee or under a sport coat or with a hoodie. Find a color and texture you like to add to your fall wardrobe this season.

MENS+HENLEY_LR

Jog Pant

Going along with the sportswear theme this season is the new bottom that is now designed to complement all the  polished sportswear pieces.

MENS+JOG+PANT_LR

Puffer –

This has been a favorite for a while.  They are ultra-light and easy to pack and easy to wear.  The puffy vests and jackets are the perfect  fall completer piece. It weighs nothing and you can stuff it in a backpack.

MENS+PUFFER_LR

Tailored Vest

The vest can mix and match with almost everything in your closet. It can also be dressed up or dressed down.  It is another great completer piece to any man’s wardrobe.

MENS+TAILORED+VEST_LR

Boot

This isn’t your grandpa’s work boot. Try a desert boot to a work wear-inspired option.  Updated soles and vintage leathers in contrasting colors are the top trends. The browns and camels are hot colors this fall.  Notice the British tan messenger bag for carrying either college books or client files.

MENS+THE+BOOT_LR

Velvet Sport Coat

It’s not just for the holidays. It can be worn with jeans or a dress pant. You will find it in several jewel tone colors to add a touch of flash to your wardrobe.

MENS+VELVET+SPORTCOAT_LR

Remember, it is just as important that men find the best colors in their clothing to fit their dominant color characteristics as it is for women. If you, or the man in your life you are shopping for, is a very slim and trim guy and you have a hard time finding things to fit and won’t look baggy, try Banana Republic.  I recently had a male client that was in this category and I was able to find pants and shirts in both “Slim” and “Tailored Slim” styles that fit perfectly.  You see ladies, men have body shape issues too!

Most Wanted List for Women for Fall 2014

2 Sep

Where did the summer go?!  I can’t believe it has come and gone already. I spent most of the summer traveling and speaking and met some wonderful and beautiful ladies along the way!

Of course, we will still have some more warm weather but it is definitely time to start thinking Fall Fashions!  Once again, I had the opportunity to attend the Fall 2014 Fashion preview at Belk with Arlene Goldstein, Belk’s VP of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction and I am excited to share what’s new for the season in my next few blog posts.

Let’s start with the Most Wanted List for Women and the ten must-have items for the season.

Soft Pant

Most+Wanted+Sunny+Leigh+Soft+Pant_008_LR

These pants were very popular in the spring and are carrying over to the fall. They are softly structured and often athletic inspired. Start with solids and work your way up to bold patterns. It is femininity with a sporty attitude. These mix well with  this white blouse. We are seeing the return of pearls – but not your mamma’s pearls (these are big and bold). Notice they are worn on the outside of the collar which is very trendy.

Longer Skirts

Most+Wanted+Longer+Skirt_001+(2)_LR

Skirt lengths are all over the place. This new trend is over the knee, mid-calf or all the way. Just remember that your best hem length is going to be in the “diamond” openings of your legs.  That is going to be most flattering on you and will work better for you than the latest trends.  Notice the cropped boxy sweater top she is wearing with this longer skirt and the ever-popular bootie shoe which is in trend again this season.

Creative Cardigan

Most+Wanted+Romeo+and+Juliet+Statement+Cardigan_015_LR

This sweater is the season’s must have completer piece with new shapes,  trims and  textures. Let the layering begin! It’s like adding the 3rd piece to polish off an outfit and the versatility = value.

Novelty Vest

Picture1

Furry, fluffy, quilted or tailored—the vest will make everything look great. It’s great to accessorize any look and is very versatile.  You can wear a vest with most anything.

Fashion Sweatshirt

Most+Wanted+Sam+Edelman+Sweatshirt_003_LR

We saw a lot of embellished sweatshirts last fall and  this item has continued its staying power. Fabric blocking and luxe embellishments have elevated this top from “so so” to seriously chic. It’s just not weekend wear with the embellishments or quilted or adding leather to the mix. It’s all in the details.

Tunic Top

Most+Wanted+Plaid+Tunic_012_LR

This is one of my favorite types of tops to wear and is so good for most body types. This is a flattering length for most anyone and looks very polished. The high-low hems continue to be popular, as well as novelty fabrics. Notice the plaid which is big for fall also.

Midi Length Sheath

Most+Wanted+2+Maggy+London+Sheath+Dress_030_LR

This dress is a  tried and true silhouette but with a little bit longer length. This is the dress that is always a classic and a must-have for most any wardrobe.

Statement Neck

Most+Wanted+Vince+Camuto+Necklace_015_LR

This jewelry item can update and refresh anything! Notice the bold stones, chain details and burnished metals. A statement necklace will bring attention to the face where it needs to be.  Also notice that mixing metals is very in right now.

Over the Knee Boots

Most+Wanted+2+Dolce+Vida+boot_006_LR

This is the #1 shoe of the season.  They feel modern and look very stylish. You can wear them with slim pants or skirts. You will find them  in vintage leathers and shiny leathers and in black, brown and the new color for fall -British Camel

Satchel

Most+Wanted+Michael+Kors+Tote+Bag_013_LR

Of course, my favorite wardrobe piece is always the handbag! This Michael Kors has a simple shape and subtle details.  It is a very classic hand held bag and is perfect to add a pop of color to your look.

Remember, you don’t have to wear every trend but just pick one or two that shows YOUR fashion personality!  Add a piece or two to your current wardrobe to give it the updated look for the season. If you would like help finding your own personal style and  personal shopping, contact me and I would love to help!  Be watching for my next Blog post where I will share the top 10 must have items for the man in  your life!
